Interview: Where are they now?

Welcome to our newest column, Where are they now? My name is Jean Ormiston and through these interviews I would like to introduce you to the alumni of Team Energy!

Once I had joined Team Energy, I was curious as to how it was founded and what the founders and alumni of Team Energy were up to now.

I have had the honour of interviewing Minke Goes, one of the founders of Team Energy, for this first article!

Who are we?

Team Energy is a group of enthusiastic, motivated and talented students interested in the current energy transition. The energy transition is a topic with high societal relevance, some important changes need to be made in order to maintain life as we know it today. To initiate these changes is challenging, not only awareness and willingness are needed, but also new creative ideas and smart technical innovations. Therefore, we created the following mission:

We, Team Energy, accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy through technological innovation, by informing, inspiring and connecting students with relevant others, inside and outside the university, in order to encourage them to contribute to this energy transition.

Inspire

A grand idea and drive are needed in order to pursue an innovation. We aim to inspire people to come to these ideas. Through our events, we aim to motivate students to contribute to the energy transition in a way that suits them and gives them energy.

Energy Cafe and SET talks

Inform

We aim to support students in their endeavor to learn about the energy transition and the current innovations. By providing information, we seek to create knowledge amongst students and help them to find a way to contribute.

Connect

Connection with others allows for the spread of ideas and the attainment of information. We believe, that by working together and sharing our knowledge with others, we can come to stronger ideas and innovations. By facilitating the dialogue between various disciplines and backgrounds, we support this exchange and fuel the energy transition. In doing so, we hope that concrete solutions are realized.

Our motivation

In December 2015, the world united to fight climate change in The Paris Agreement [1]. 195 Countries agreed to the world's first universal action plan to tackle climate change by limiting global warming to ‘well below 2°C’. This historic achievement was just the beginning – now every country must turn their promises into action.

The European Union set key targets for 2020, 2030 and a long-term goal. One of these targets concerns a cut in the greenhouse gas emissions. The problem is that for this reduction to become reality, our economy, lifestyle and infrastructure needs to change. Initiating these changes is
challenging; not only awareness and willingness, but also new technical solutions and improvements are needed. And they are needed fast, as the current transition towards sustainable energy is proceeding too slowly to meet the goals set in the Paris Agreements [2].

The TU/e students of today will be the engineers of tomorrow. We believe that an important step in the energy transition lies in informing and inspiring these future generations about the different ways they can contribute to the energy transition. Cooperation between students from different technical disciplines, researchers and professionals allows us to share knowledge and innovative ideas, and to create new opportunities to challenge the status quo.
